“Altares y Ofrendas” 39th annual Dia de los Muertos

2016-11-02 18:00 - 2016-11-02 21:00
VENUE 1
1800 Fredericksburg Rd, San Antonio, TX 78201, USA

Since 1977, Centro Cultural has opened its doors to tourists and residents to take part in the biggest and oldest Dia de los Muertos Celebration paying tribute to this ancient tradition.

Centro Cultural Aztlan celebrates the Annual Dia de los Muertos with a group exhibition of Altares y Ofrendas on November 2nd.  Community artists are invited to create altares in our gallery and help facilitate a dialogue that examines the history and traditions of this cultural festivity.  This event illustrates the artistic, cultural and religious facets of this popular pre-Columbian/Mexican tradition where death is seen as a natural part of life and this reality is approached with gaiety and humor.  Photographs of loved ones grace altars as well as offerings of food and other things associated with Dia de los Muertos, such as marigolds, incense, and candles. The entire gallery is transformed into a giant installation that is a sumptuous feast for the senses.

Be a part of this year’s Celebration!

Opening reception Wednesday, Nov. 2nd from 6-9pm. Suggested admission: $3. Kids and students are free.

View our exhibit of “Altares y Ofrendas” by community artists and students, enjoy Pan de muerto, Ponche de frutas, and other treats as you visit with friends and shop for special Dia de los Muertos creations from some of San Antonio’s most talented artists and artisans in our “Avenida de los Artesanos”.
Be prepared to dance when the drum rhythms of the Carnaval de San Anto dance troupe arrive to lead us in danzas choreographed for the festive occasion! Suggested admission: $3

Exhibit can be viewed Monday-Friday 9am-5pm until Nov. 9th, 2016.

Get your taste buds ready for one of the most deliciously unique fundraising events you will ever attended. The 10th Annual Mole Throwdown, hosted by Centro Cultural Aztlan, is a culinary experience blended with art to promote Chicano/Latino Art and Culture in an innovative way that benefits Centro Cultural Aztlan’s year-long programming. Mole is traditionally prepared for special events, bringing together friends and families. Mole is a delightfully rich tasting dark sauce infused with the flavors of chili peppers, chocolate, and about 25 or more spicy ingredients, and then lovingly poured over turkey or chicken. Indulgent mole dishes will be prepared and generously donated by local restaurants and local chefs for your taste buds to enjoy. Cerveza (beer) will be iced down and served to complement the meal. A tequila tasting bar will be provided by Salud Tequila Bar, and Tito’s Handmade vodka will be serving a cocktail to refresh your palate.  Patrons will be asked to vote for their favorite recipe, and a new winner will be announced! In addition to the sampling of mole, there will be a Silent Art Auction featuring the works of artists who have supported Centro Cultural Aztlan for over three decades. These artists’ contribution is their way to show their gratitude to an organization, which focuses on promoting Chicano/Latino Art and Culture. The 10thAnnual Mole Throwdown promises to be an exciting fundraising event sure to satisfy its patrons with good food and drink while promoting and contributing to an organization dedicated to supporting Chicano, Latino, and Indigenous art.
