Two-Person and Group Shows

Centro Cultural Aztlan seeks exhibition proposals from local artists and artist groups interested in exhibiting as part of the Cultural Inspiration Series at Centro Cultural Aztlan’s Galería for the months of June, July, and August 2019. Centro Aztlan is focusing on two-person and group shows of any medium.

One exhibition will be selected per month. Selected respondents will receive administrative and marketing support for the exhibition. Centro Aztlan’s staff will handle social media, marketing, press,
publicity, and installation. Any artwork that is sold will be sold with 70% paid directly to the artists, and 30% commission for Centro Cultural Aztlan. Centro Cultural Aztlan is proud to make art accessible to the community through our 90-day payment plans.

Proposals should align with the mission, vision, and programming of Centro Cultural Aztlan. Centro Cultural Aztlan (CCA) was founded in 1977 with a vision to build upon the traditions of

Chicano/a, Latino/a, and indigenous peoples by creating cultural programs that involve local artists and increase public awareness of their work. We continue to serve this mission today through our commitment to preserving and promoting Chicano/a, Latino/a, and indigenous arts and culture, and through our commitment to diversity, education, and promotion of local artists. All practicing professional (emerging and established) artists are eligible to submit proposals as a minimum two-person exhibition, or a group exhibition in collaboration with several artists. We will not accept proposals from curators, art-dealers, or organizations. Artists submitting a proposal to Centro Aztlan must not act as art dealers, be employed by art dealers, or retain an interest in dealership of any of the art work by the artist(s) included in their proposal.

Artists submitting proposals, either as a two-person exhibition or as part of a group, must include information in their Proposal Narrative as to how they will establish an objective perspective in the interpretation of their art work.

Artist representatives are ineligible to apply.

Respondents may submit only one proposal per exhibition cycle, as a two-person or group exhibition, and may not participate in more than one exhibition for this call. Artwork must be available for exhibition and installation-ready to be considered for selection.


An Evaluation Committee made up of Centro Cultural Aztlan artistic staff, local artists, and local curators will be responsible for reviewing and evaluating proposals in accordance with the stated selection criteria as well as the adherence to the mission and vision of Centro Cultural Aztlan. The evaluation committee will make recommendations, and the Centro Cultural Aztlan artistic staff will approve the selections. Once exhibitions are selected, staff will contact the respondent to negotiate terms of agreements which will include, but not be limited to, exhibition schedules and installation requirements.


Selections will be based on proposal’s alignment with the mission of Centro Cultural Aztlan, artistic merit and quality of the proposal, respondent’s experience and qualifications, and suitability of the exhibition to the facility.

The building is considered conducive to artwork exhibits rather than performances. Therefore, for this call, performance pieces will not be considered. However, if the artists would like a performance piece to be a part of the opening reception for an exhibition, Centro Cultural Aztlan staff will evaluate requests on a case-by-case basis.

Artwork dimensions and weight may factor as selection criteria based upon space limitations and/or installation constraints. Consideration includes maintaining standards of public display and must be appropriate for general audiences in order to be considered for exhibition.

Centro Cultural Aztlan maintains final decision regarding the installation and display of all artworks.  The information listed below identifies the criteria that will be used by the evaluation committee when reviewing applications:

50% – Artistic Merit and Quality of Proposal

Artistic merit and overall strength of the artist(s) and/or art work included in the proposed exhibition.  The proposal appropriately conveys the respondent’s concept.  Proposed exhibition adheres to the Centro Cultural Aztlan mission statement/strategic plan and its commitment preserving and promoting Chicano/a, Latino/a, and indigenous arts and culture, and through our commitment to diversity, education, and promotion of local artists.

For two-person submissions: Artists have provided sufficient information regarding their ability to present an objective perspective of their work.

30% – Experience and Qualifications

Respondent has an established track record of successful exhibitions/programs, or demonstrates (through education, training, and/or experience) the ability to successfully present a professional exhibition/program at Centro Cultural Aztlan

For two-person exhibition submissions: Artists have at least five years’ experience and/or specialized art training, such as a degree or certificate, as well as a professional portfolio that includes publicly displayed works.  Respondent demonstrates knowledge of Chicano/a, indigenous, and/or Latino/a culture and history, specifically as it relates to the mission of Centro Cultural Aztlan.

20% – Suitability of the Exhibition/Program to the Facility

Proposal is feasible and has the ability to meet programming and facility requirements, including schedule, space/architectural limitations, and budget constraints. Exhibition/programming content is appropriate for general audiences.
